It helps us to understand the changes taking place in the earth's crust and it helps us to corrolate the amount of damage done to the strength of the quake. It can also tell us some other important things such as if a volcano is becoming more or less active. It can tell us something about the size of a tsunami which could have been produced by the earthquake under water etc... so there are many reasons to understand and measure the strength of earthquakes.
