It doesn't necessarily. Typically the stratosphere is cooler than the troposphere, where we reside. People may be inclined to think that, because warm air rises, that the air may become warmer the further from the earth. It's the opposite however. As the air rises, it cools and expands. This is also part of how clouds form. Typically though the stratosphere isn't warm.

The stratosphere is layered in temperature because ozone (O3) here absorbs high energy UVB and UVC energy waves from the Sun and is broken down into atomic oxygen (O) and diatomic oxygen (O2). Atomic oxygen is found prevalent in the upper stratosphere due to the bombardment of UV light and the destruction of both ozone and diatomic oxygen. The mid stratosphere has less UV light passing through it, O and O2 are able to combine, and is where the majority of natural ozone is produced. It is when these two forms of oxygen recombine to form ozone that they release the heat found in the stratosphere. The lower stratosphere receives very low amounts of UVC, thus atomic oxygen is not found here and ozone is not formed (with heat as the byproduct). This vertical stratification, with warmer layers above and cooler layers below, makes the stratosphere dynamically stable: there is no regular convection and associatedturbulence in this part of the atmosphere. The top of the stratosphere is called the stratopause, above which the temperature decreases with height.

The upper troposphere loses heat to space. This answer sources the Wikipedia article on Stratosphere.

The upper stratosphere is above the ozone layer, so none of the Sun's energy is absorbed before it reaches to upper stratosphere.

Is the upper stratosphere colder then the lower stratosphere?

Yes, the upper stratosphere is colder than the lower stratosphere. This is because the stratosphere is heated from below by the Earth's surface, so as you move higher in the atmosphere, the temperature decreases. The temperature inversion between the lower and upper stratosphere is due to the absorption of solar radiation by ozone in the upper stratosphere.

Why is the temperature greater in the upper part of stratosphere?

because the upper part of the stratosphere is closer to the sun, which means the temperature is higher or greater in the upper part.:);)
