Rainfall is a important part of water cycle that we have studied in our earlier classes. Without rainfall, how would water that gets evaporated from water bodies will be back to their origin.

Rainfall occurs because water droplets that constitute clouds gets so big in size that they no longer can be in air and falls down in form of rain.

What instrument is used to measure the amount of rainfalls?

A rain gauge is used to measure the amount of rainfall. It consists of a cylindrical tube that collects rainwater, and the depth of the water is then measured to determine the rainfall amount.

Where are gullies?

Gullies are typically found in hilly or mountainous regions where there is a lot of erosion caused by water flow, such as after heavy rainfalls or snowmelt. They are commonly seen on sloping terrain where the soil is loose and easily carried away by water.

What are Seasonal period of heavy rainfall?

Seasonal periods of heavy rainfall are typically associated with the monsoon season in tropical regions. These periods occur when moist air masses bring heavy precipitation to the area, resulting in prolonged and intense rainfall. Seasonal heavy rainfalls can lead to flooding, landslides, and other hazards in affected areas.

Is running water an important erosional agent in arid lands despite infrequent rainfalls?

Yes, running water can still be an important erosional agent in arid lands because when it does rain, the runoff can be strong and cause erosion by carrying away loose material. The sporadic nature of rainfall in arid regions can lead to flash floods that have significant erosional power, sculpting landscapes over time.

Where does heavy rain fall happen?

Heavy rainfalls can occur in regions with high humidity and atmospheric instability, such as tropical areas, monsoon regions, and during intense thunderstorms. Topographical features like mountains can also lead to heavy rainfall due to orographic lifting of air masses. Climate change can further intensify heavy rainfall events in certain regions.
