Well, the most obvious reason is that oil isn't infinite and takes millions of years to form from compacted animal and plant matter. It would be foolhardy to not develop a more permanent solution to the energy crisis when the world has almost depleted its supply of fossil fuels. It's also not economical to continue using oil like we are, as prices will only continue to rise as it becomes ever more scarce.
