For the propagation of transverse waves the material medium must have cohesive property is a must. Air medium does not have cohesion. Hence the situation.

The matter through which a wave travels is called what?

a medium. but longitudinal waves do not have to travel through a medium. This is why transverse waves cannot vibrate through space.a medium. but longitudinal waves do not have to travel through a medium. This is why transverse waves cannot vibrate through space.

Why do transverse waves not need a medium?

Wrong.Earthquake S-waves are just one example of transverse waves that do need a medium to travel through. Specifically they need a solid medium and cannot not travel through either liquid or gaseous mediums.Perhaps you are confusing transverse waves in general with electromagnetic waves (which happen to be transverse) but do not need a medium because they are a propagating electric field - magnetic field each creating the other in a cycle.

Why transverse wave cannot travel through air or gas?

A transverse wave of light can travel through air or gas.

Which wave cannot travel through air or water?

THROUGH air or water transverse waves cannot travel. But on the surface of water transverse waves can be produced

What media does a transverse wave travel through?

It depends on the type of transverse wave. A transverse water wave travels through water. A transverse wave on a rope travels along the rope. A transverse electromagnetic wave, however, needs no medium. It can propagate through a vacuum.

State 2 differences between transverse waves and longitudinal waves?

First and foremost is that rigidity is essential for transverse waves to travel through the medium. But in longitudinal it is not essential. So transverse waves cannot be propagated through gasses. Second, the vibrations of particles of the medium will be perpendicular to the direction of motion of the wave. Whereas in the case of longitudinal waves, the vibrations are in the same direction as that of the wave propagation.

Does light need a medium through which to travel?

No, it does not. It can travel through any open space. Sound, unlike light, needs a medium to travel. So light can travel through outer space but sound cannot because there is no medium.

Does a transverse wave need a physical medium to travel?

yes

What is the only kind of wave that does not need a solid liquid or gas medium to pass through?

Shear / transverse waves do not travel through liquids.

Waves that move through air can they be transverse?

Yes and no.Mechanical transverse waves require tightly packed medium such as in solid matter. Longitudinal waves, such as sound, can travel through solids or fluids (liquids and gases).Electromagnetic waves, which are often described as transverse waves but do not require any medium, can travel through air. EM waves include radio, micro, X-ray, visible light etc.

Can sound travel through liquid medium in zero gravity?

Yes, sound is a longitudinal wave, transverse waves could not travel on the surface without gravity.

What is it that sound cannot travel through?

Sound can travel through any medium. If you remove the medium you would end up with a vacuum. It is in vacuums that sound cannot travel as it needs a medium to travel (it travels as a compression wave or shear wave). Space is almost a perfect vacuum so sound is unable to travel through space.
