The name fluorine comes from the Latin verbfluere, meaning "to flow."

The material fluorspar was widely used in the 16th century as a flux, a chemical cleaning agent that facilitates soldering, brazing, and welding by removing oxidation from the surface of metals to be joined. This was thought of as facilitating the flow of metals. Hence, when fluorine was identified as an important component of fluorspar, a name derived from the Latin word for "flow" was given to it.
