Strangely enough the world has already gotten through severe pollution related changes.
Originally the earth had a reducing atmosphere (one without oxygen) as photosynthesis became more popular among life forms the content of oxygen rose destroying the environment for anaerobic organisms. Oxygen was in this case a pollutant.
In today's world ithe levels of pollution will never reach a stage where all life is destroyed - something will be left that can take advantage of the new environmental conditions. We may not survive, life will. So the world will not be destroyed - just us.
