There are many types of lightning STREAMERS that start a lightning strike. There are 3 basic places where streamers will originate from. They can come from a cloud to the ground or the ground to a cloud or from cloud to cloud. So your teacher was correct. But not always from the ground.
sometimes it does but not allways _______________________________________________________________________ It actually starts from the cloud base when a stepped leader comes down from the cloud base and meets the return stroke from the ground, which is what makes the visible lightning that we see with our eyes. In the nice attempt to educate you, your science teacher was incorrect.
I am 100 percent sure that lightning comes from the clouds. The bottom part of the clouds are sometimes negatively charged and when they get near high objects (usually trees or tall buildings) they release all the negative charged atoms as plasma.

if you are in a field and there is one tree lightening strikes the tallest object around and if you are under that tree you will feel the effects of that strike or part of the tree could break of where lightening hits and fall on you. if your in a field and lighening starts to strike get as low to the ground as you can till you can seek cover

because (fork lightning in particular) lightning starts on the ground!
Yes it is safer un a car than outside because the metal of the car attracts lightning but safely routes it to the ground but this is not do to your rubber tires as proved by NASA. Maddog1198

you in a science class with a woman as your teacher and her name starts with c to m
First, watch for lightning. The second it hits the ground, starts counting in seconds. Stop when you hear thunder. divide the seconds by 5 to get how many miles away the lightning is. For kilometers, divide the seconds by 3.
science starts here, starts now.
