Bother nations were trying to starve the other into surrendering by sinking each others supply ships. Since Britain held naval superiority food shortages were less severe in Britain and were not life threatening This was not the case for Germany. In the winter of 1916, thousands of Germans died of starvation as a result of a man made economic fall.
