Social conflict erupted in 1877 from years of depression and deflation following the panic of 1873. Railroad workers faced hard times. When the Presidents of the four largest railroad companies decided in 1877 to cut wages by 10%, the workers struck back. Work stoppages spread like wildfire from Baltimore to St. Louis due to outpouring working-class support for the strikers.
The failure of the great railroad strike showed the weakness of the labor movement. Racial and ethnic fissures among workers everywhere fracture labor unity and were particularly acute between the Irish and Chinese in California. Chinese-Immigrants had it difficult. It was mainly single men who had menial jobs such as cooks and laundrymen who immigrated over from China.
