A country is considered developed when it's citizens possess the knowledge and skills they need and majority of them are highly educated. When literacy rate is high, people can have better jobs, thus increasing the GNP and per capita income aside from providing a decent life. The government can concentrate in solving problems in other fields like education instead of trying to solve the problem on poverty. There will be less human rights violations because many can read and understand the law. If people's rights are violated, they can defend themselves. the government can then save, time, effort, and money in the implementation of its laws, thus maintaining, if not increasing, it's GNP.

the GDP does not affect the literacy rate. The literacy rate affects the GDP. normally the higher the literacy rate, the higher the GDP, but not always. Some countries can have a very high literacy rate, but not a high GDP. but most of the time the higher the literacy rate, the higher the GDP and standard of living.
