In these modern times, the economies of the States that border the Mississippi River are not nearly as dependent on the river as they once were. In the old days, land transportation and river transportation was a large part of the economies. Now that there is an adequate highway system, railway system, and airline transport, the river has lost a lot of it's influence.
The pollution factor has added a lot of challenges to all the states that line the River, and they have to try to work together to meet those challenges. With the modern abilities of flood control, the periodic floods that used to plague them are not as bad a problem, but come with a whole new set of challenges, to keep it in constant repair.
Tourism on the River and along the banks has always been a revenue producing activity, and much of the economy has been built up to encourage tourists. Again, there has been a big shift of the economic pressures away from being entirely dependent on the River for income, and the population shifts have moved inland.

Mississippi River. :)
The Ohio and Missouri rivers are considered tributaries of the Mississippi River because they flow into it, contributing their water and sediment. The Ohio River merges with the Mississippi at Cairo, Illinois, while the Missouri River joins the Mississippi near St. Louis, Missouri. As tributaries, they play a crucial role in the hydrology of the Mississippi River system, influencing its flow and ecological health. Their watersheds also support diverse ecosystems and are vital for regional economies.
