Why are all countries obsessed with power?

Not all ancient civilizations were obsessed with power. What can safely be said is that ancient nations' first obligation was to protect itself from more aggressive nations. The nation of Judea was only interested, as example, in protecting its own territories. It had no aspirations to expand as did its neighbors of Egypt and Persia. Now in the ancient world, power equated to wealth. The Roman City-State was not founded with the idea of world domination. It saw however that wars it fought to protect itself opened the door to more power & wealth. In the modern world, most countries are not obsessed with power either. Their main objective in most cases is to proper and increase the standard of living for their citizens.

What are negative aspects of advertising?

1) Advertising is a powerful educational force, counteracting certain aspects of formal education through an appeal to illogic and irrationality. 2) Advertising, as it now exists, weakens character structure through appeal to selfishness and self-centeredness. 3) Advertising fosters greediness, discontent, and the wrong kind of competitiveness between people--that is, not the competition for excellence, but of things; it fosters self-esteem based on consumerism, and human worth is equated with brand names and conspicuous consumption. 4) It is hurtful to human relationships. The growth of selling through sexism and sexual exploitation is one important growing failure in man-woman relationships. It is one of the reasons why the woman over 45 is considered worthless, and tossed on the social dump heap.

Why did farmers oppose the gold standard?

In the United States, bimetallism (gold vs silver) became a center of political conflict toward the end of the nineteenth century. Newly discovered silver mines in the American West caused an effective decrease in the value of money. In 1873, in order to de-monetize silver, the government passed the Fourth Coinage Act, just as these silver resources were beginning to be exploited. Proponents of monetary silver, known as the Silverites, referred to this act as "The Crime of '73," as it was judged to have inhibited inflation. Instead deflation resulted, causing problems for farmers with large mortgages who found they could sell their goods for only a fraction of their post-Civil War price. In addition, improvements in transport meant it was cheaper for farmers to ship their grain to Europe, and they over-expanded production until there was a glut on the market. The Panic of 1893 was a severe nationwide depression that brought the money issue to the fore. The "silverites" argued that using silver would inflate themoney supply and mean more cash for everyone, which they equated with prosperity. The gold advocates said silver would permanently depress the economy, but thatsound money produced by a gold standard would restore prosperity.
