According to the US Census Bureau, more than 16% of the US population in 2012 lived below the official poverty level of a total $ 23,000 family income for a family of four. Some 1.5% are living in "extreme poverty", having to live on less than $2 a day. Children are hardest hit: 20% were living below the poverty line in 2012.
