This will artificially raise prices of nearly everything, causing people to buy fewer things than they normally would, which will decrease the tax revenue collected by the government.

The government, in turn, will raise taxes in a vain attempt to recover its lost revenue, which of course will raise prices even higher. This causes people to make even fewer purchases, which will decrease government revenue again. and over and over. It is a vicious cycle.
