Should boys be required to do home economics?

Being a boy means you are on your way to becoming a man. A man is able to be self sufficient with a proper balance in your life. It is important to keep things running smoothly, and maintaining good health, nutrition, and personal hygiene by having the skills to perform all of the functions required to thrive the modern home.

Boys often go from the care of their parents at home to bachelorhood - lacking many of the skills needed to take care of themselves. Usually, one or the other parent is the primary caretaker of the home doing chores of house cleaning, laundry, sewing, shopping, preparing meals, and washing dishes. Children tend to rely too heavily on this care. Having children, both boys and girls, help with the chores at home relieves some of the burden off parents, and gives the child some of the skills and work ethics that will improve their future relationships and other life endeavors.

One of the main things to learn about home economics is that it is the responsibility of both people in a domestic relationship. Even if one partner is decidedly the primary money earner, the paying job is typically a 40 hour per week commitment. However, the obligations of caring for the home, and/or children is a 24/7 responsibility. Young men should learn that it is not a fair assessment that the money belongs to the husband who works a job while the wife stays at home, or that all of the domestic duties fall on the woman.

The reality is that neither spouse can get hired to work a job, yet ignore the chores that maintain a home, especially if there are children. The caring for the home and children is a joint responsibility, and should be shared equally. To come home from work, and expect that your job is done is an antiquated notion, and young boys need to begin to learn the skills necessary to take an equal part in home economics, regardless of who earns the most money. Disputes over finances is one of the leading causes of divorce, and broken homes, therefore it is wise to learn how to manage a household budget, and have both partners take an equal roll in the sharing of the funds, the paying of the bills, and doing the chores to maintain the house and care for children.

Yes, in fact I hope I am remembering correctly: Paul Harvey told a story about a school that was trying to get boys to take Home Economics. They tried two or three different labels for the course but when they labeled it, "Bachelor Survival" they had many takers!
