Nuclear Radiation is used in many different ways in medicine. Some of the ways...

A chemical (sorry, I don't know its name) with affinity to heart muscle can be tagged with 99mTc and injected IV to allow a collimated gamma 3-D picture to be taken of the heart. Since the chemical has an affinity to heart muscle, this produces a picture that shows how well the infusion rate is dispersed throughout the heart. Ischemia, caused by clots or prior heart attacks, shows up as light areas, gving a very good picture of where the heart is damaged. This is usually followed by a stress test, either by treadmill or by chemical means, followed by a second injection of the tagged chemical, often at a higher activity concentration, which effectively overwhelms the prior picture. Comparison of the resting state with the exertion state gives an excellent picture of the performance of the heart. In fact, the only better test is an angiogram, but that is usually reserved, due to cost, to more vigorous symptomology, such as an ongoing heart attack.

Another test, using a different chemical, can be used to build a picture of the distribution of cancer. Usually, this is a bone scan. The technology and the isotope are similar.

X-Rays are a well known form of nuclear radiation. There is also MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) based on excitation/de-exitation of electrons, generating radio waves. Last, there is PET scan, Positron Emission Tomography, based on the annihilation photopeaks of electrons and positrons, often used in brain scans.

There are probably other tests, but I am not familiar with them. Anyone with more knowledge is certainly welcome to refine this answer.

Mainly to produce electricity. Also to produce radio-isotopes for medical and industrial use

Radioisotopes of various sorts can be made by irradiating samples in a nuclear reactor. These radioisotopes can be used either for diagnosis or for radiotherapy.
