Lack of industrialization and modernization due to the centralized bureaucracy of the communist party. The great poverty and failure of harvests from the middle of the 20th century has led to a knock on effect, leaving formerly soviet nations still playing catch up in modernizing their national industries, agricultural techniques and political systems. In addition the internal strife which effected so many countries following the brake up of the CCCP made larger nations reluctant to invest and deprived the economies of much needed foreign capital. These conflicts also discouraged tourism and left large shortfalls in the economy which are only now being overcome.
