The term "weak D" is used when the letter "D" on a coin, whether it be the mint mark or in one of the words on the coin, is not as prominent as it should be. There are various reasons for this but probably the most common cause is the letter imprint on the die used to make the coin is partly filled with metal from previously struck coins or grease from the presses or even dirt that may have found its way into the process so the letter is not struck as well as it was intended. The result is a letter that is more faint than it should have been. Sometimes the letter in the die is completely filled in and is not visible at all on the coin.

Weak letters are collectable errors but missing letters are more sought after. An example of this is the 1922 D Lincoln Cent of which there are specimens with a weak "D" and as the letter in the die continued to be filled in, the mint mark disappeared completely. This caused the cent to appear to have been minted at Philadelphia since that mint did not place a mint mark on their coins. However, there were no cents struck at the Philadelphia mint in 1922 so all 1922 cents with no mint mark are actually the error coins struck at the Denver mint.
