An agricultural economy that relied mostly of slave labor
"Non-farm activity" in economics means any employment, whether for wages or self-employment, and in any endeavor, which generates non-agricultural income. What this means is even though the area is mostly agricultural, other work is done in that area. Examples might be: tourism, mining, timber processing, or a woman who sets up a seamstress business in her home.
The economy was based mostly off of the fur trade and and the export of several agricultural products, such as wheat (that's a big one), pitch, tar, wood products (boats and stuff), and livestock.
Capital goods have been the largest category of U.S exports. This includes automobiles, engines, parts, and industrial equipments. U.S. mostly imports consumer goods including clothing, makeup, electronics etc.

The development of new technologies, such as the steam engine and mechanized farming equipment, played a significant role in advancing from the agricultural age to the industrial age. These innovations increased productivity, leading to urbanization and the rise of factories powered by coal and later electricity. Additionally, the shift towards a market economy and the growth of trade and commerce further propelled the transition to the industrial age.
