The Civil War hurt the south because it cost a lot of money and it destroyed much of its infrastructure. It also put an end to the free labor used in much of the south when the slaves were freed.

Principally the Union naval blockade, which stopped the South from exporting its cotton in exchange for war supplies.

Latterly, it was Sherman's March to the Sea that ruined the economy by devastating the farms and railroads. By this time, the Confederate dollar was practically worthless, as it was not backed by gold, only by the assumption of Southern victory and independence.
