A cartel is a joing of all business of same sort to form a single business. Cartel mergers are profitable. For example there are three firms which behave as a cartel, if all firms collude to act as a single firm, the merger will be profitable in oligopolistic industries. It will ensure the firm will gain an economic profit and will eventually drive off the weaker firm and the price benifit will go to consumers. (Term cartel is used when similar businesses merge to form a single business, a monopoly).

Can a merger be considered a means of raising additional equity capital?

Yeah, in some case it is considered as a means for raising additional capital but only in the case when one of the companies is financially strong then such a merger is profitable and according to activetrader-links.com if two companies with same strengths or weaknesses do a merger then such a merger will be in vain.

What is difference between merger and cartel?

A merger refers to the combination of two or more companies into a single entity, often to enhance efficiency, market share, or competitive advantage. In contrast, a cartel is an agreement between competing firms to coordinate their actions, such as fixing prices or limiting production, to gain higher profits at the expense of competition. While mergers are typically legal and subject to regulatory review, cartels are usually illegal as they undermine market competition.

What is merger cartel and consortium?

A merger cartel is a group of companies that collude to coordinate their merger or acquisition activities to manipulate market conditions, typically to avoid competition or control prices. This practice is illegal in many jurisdictions as it undermines fair competition. A consortium, on the other hand, is an association of two or more parties that collaborate for a specific purpose, often to pool resources for a project or investment, without necessarily engaging in anti-competitive behavior. While consortia may engage in mergers, they operate within legal frameworks to achieve mutual benefits.
