a dependent relationship is when one or both the people involved in the relationship depend on each other. they can not do anything without the other person at least influencing them. they do everything the other person would do. The person who is dependant on the relationship would in some cases break down if they did not have the other person.

The child should be the adults legal child, by blood or government order. They should also be financially supporting the child and no ther separately filing adult or the child on their own taxes can be claiming the child as dependent. I did taxes how h and r block and if your situation is more complicated than that, you should contact a tax professional.
