A shift where you designate staff to work on a specific date\time if needed. Ultimately you are penciling them in your schedule but not reflecting actual hours in your totals. For example you schedule John Doe to work from 9-5pm (8hrs total). However you schedule him On Call from 5-8pm (3hrs not to be reflected in your schdule hours total). So John may be needed from 9-8pm but officially he is on schedule for 8 hrs.

Companies use to prepare for peak periods when staff is needed. Again the On Call is a place holder and allows flexibilty. You are not obligated to keep the person for the On Call hours. The staff member is aware that this is not a definitive shift to be worked.

This is primarily used with part-time or seasonal workers in schedules.
