AnswerOutsourcing advisory is the nascent term used by advisory firms to explain how they support clients who are embarking on outsourcing, shared services and offshoring programmes.

The compentency area is indeed unique (compared to conventional advisory services) and requires firms and consultants who posess the depth of domain expertise to take their clients through the whole sourcing lifecycle (from pre-contractual feasibility analysis through to 'business-as-usual' vendor/contract management).

The service is more frequently and appropriately referred to as Strategic Sourcing advisory

The term outsourcing is often not focused enough to properly describe the vast array of activities and requirements in todays dynamic environment. Terms such as off-shoring, near-shoring, in-sourcing and just plain sourcing also get used in many of the situations that previously would have been referred to as outsourcing situations.

For many C-Level executives, the task of working out how to decide what needs outsourcing (and what doesn't) is a significant challenge and requires a strategic sourcing advisory expert who has a good track record of dealing with similar (or larger) problems just to get to the point where sensible and justifiable business decisions can be make about how to effectively save costs and resources in a sourcing project.
