Constitutionally speaking the role of the government is very small. They have the power to coin money, the power to tax, and the influx of government money in the general population offers a "stimulus" to that local economy. However since the government has broken away from the constitution and make their own rules the modern government is much more dangerous to the capitalist free market system the United States is accustomed to. The government can now control interstate and intercontinental commerce through taxation and "regulations." The current administration believes that it can pick and choose companies to give tax money to (i.e. Car Company and Bank Bailouts). Also through taxation and pork barreling the political elite redistribute wealth as they see fit.
