On September 29, 2008, the Dow dropped 777.68 points.
Dow mainly stands for Dow Industrial Average which is also known as Dow 30, Industrial Average, Dow Jones or Dow. Investing in Dow Jones Industrial Average is mainly accessed within equities through exchange traded funds and derivatives through future and option contracts. The Dow is used as one of the several stock market indices which was first created by Charles Dow and named after him who was the ninteenth century wall street Journal editor and co-founder. The average is named after one of his business associates. The Dow is also one of the most closely watched standard indices which tracks the activities of the stock market. The Dow elements mainly trade on the two of the largest stock market companies, NASDAQ OMX and the NYSE Euronext. Hope this helps.

Yes, the Dow Jones Industrial Average reached a low on October 15, 1987, following the significant market crash that occurred on October 19, 1987, known as Black Monday. On that day, the Dow dropped dramatically, and by October 15, it had already shown signs of volatility and decline. The crash led to a substantial loss in investor confidence and marked one of the most significant downturns in stock market history.
This was a good question as it made me learn the answer myself! Here's the link from wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dow_Jones_Industrial_Average And here's an excerpt explaining the Index. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (NYSE: DJI, also called the DJIA, Dow 30, or informally the Dow industrials, the Dow Jones or The Dow) is one of several stock market indices created by Wall Street Journal editor and Dow Jones & Company co-founder Charles Dow. Dow compiled the index as a way to gauge the performance of the industrial component of America's stock markets. It is the oldest continuing U.S. market index, aside from the Dow Jones Transportation Average, which Dow also created. Today, the average consists of 30 of the largest and most widely held public companies in the United States. The "industrial" portion of the name is largely historical—many of the 30 modern components have little to do with heavy industry. To compensate for the effects of stock splits and other adjustments, it is currently a scaled average, not the actual average of the prices of its component stocks—the sum of the component prices is divided by a divisor, which changes over time, to generate the value of the index.
There is no official maximum point drop for the Dow Jones Industrial Average in a single day, as it is influenced by market conditions, investor sentiment, and external events. However, historical data shows that the largest single-day point drop occurred on March 16, 2020, when the index fell by 2,997 points. The Dow can theoretically drop any number of points, depending on the percentage decline and the value of the stocks within the index at that time.
The closest answer I can find is the record for fastest recorded temperature drop. On 1/10/1911 in Rapid City, South Dakota it dropped 47 F° in 15 minutes.

The letter drop box was invented in 1973 by Robert Spencer who worked for Dow Chemical in Midland, Michigan. Their concept was to deposit funds from customers as soon as possible then Dow would turn around and "loan" out short term (like a weekend) funds for large corporations for purposes like meeting payroll. They made tens of thousands of dollars from a lot of "weekend loans." If they had a customer who mailed funds from Oregon, they were given an address to a lock box close enough so the payment would reach the box within one day. Courriers would visit each box multiple times a day and deposit the funds in a Dow Chemical account.
