As of 2003 55% of American households made less than $50,000 a year. Two factors to consider in this number is that households is often the combined income of two people, and that we've just come out of a massive recession. So if you're looking for a percentage of households it reasonable to assume it's an even higher number. If you're looking for individual incomes it is much higher.
