Import periods in the system of government:

Viking age -> mid 1200 : A king is in principle elected. Meaning that it's not a given fact that the oldest son just takes over after his father's death. A new king must be elected by the 'Thing' (=popular gathering) in each of the three regions of Denmark (Jutland/Funen, Zealand, Skåne).

Mid 1200 -> 1660 : Still elected, but now the King governs together with a kind of cabinet ('Rigsråd') which is a small group of representatives of the high nobility and clergy.

1660 - 1849 -> Absolutism (allegedly one of the most 'absolute' in Europe)

1849 - 1901 -> Constitutional monarchy, where there is a Parliament, but the king appoints the government.

1901 - Now : Still constitutional monarchy, but now combined with Parlimentarism, which means that no government can have a majority of the Parliament against it.
