A loaf of local chain store bread was about 55 dents, brand name, probably still local, 79 cents. A pack of cigarettes was a dollar. A six pack of generic beer was 99 cents. A three dozen box of Trojan brand condoms was seven dollars. A pair of shoes at a discount store was seven dollars. Gasoline was about $1.20 a gallon. The gas price is the most telling. It is about equivalent or a little less than what we pay today ($3.00). Chicken was about the same price, or a little cheaper, 70-90 cents a pound whole. And I can still find bread for less than 70 cents a loaf. What went up most in price was sin: alcohol, cigarettes and condoms. 600%, and 700% for cigarettes and beer and about the same for condoms, although I haven't seen a three dozen box in ages. Here's a site I just found that compares prices from the past to the present or in some cases just to a certain year. http://qrc.depaul.edu/djabon/cpi.htm
