Although by the 1950s the United States was an affluent country, poverty persisted for several reasons, and within several groups. First, segregation was still very much a part of the American landscape, and in some very unexpected ways. While most would imagine the south to be segregated with Jim Crow laws still in place, the north also was segregated in the jobs and living areas, blacks were allowed to take part in. Poor whites in the Appalachian area subsisted with little or no education, low job opportunities, and early marriages that resulted in large families ,which kept them at the poverty level.
