There's quite a number of reasons why. It's an excuse to get away from the city life and away from all the concrete and people going to and fro. Farming involves working with nature, with the land so that food can be grown to feed other people. It's also a way of life that can only be enjoyed by those who like to get their hands dirty and want to have a career where they are helping others that doesn't involve having to sit in an office all day. Farming is also a great way to educate ourselves where our food really comes from and how it's grown and harvested. It's also an excuse to work with and own animals that are illegal to own on a city lot, like horses, goats, cattle, pigs and sheep.

But I believe the primary reason that people farm is not because it generates lots of income (which couldn't be farther from the truth), but because it's the most hard-working and rewarding career a person can have to help feed people, be it your non-farm family and friends, or people in another state/province, country or continent.
