It's important because it allows us to calculate the amount of energy available for organisms to consume after respiration by producers. It also lets us see the Human impact on productivity which is estimated that we only make up about one half of a percent of the global biomass of Earth but use up 25-32% of Net Primary productivity (NPP). Land transformation and increased human population call for more residential neighborhoods/cities and food/resources needed for survival which increase pressure on NPP resources that all organisms compete for. As well as the issue of appropriation which tips the balance for food energy and due to the over-consumption of NPP leaves an impact on us including other organisms.
