capital punishment started so people would get punished for what they did
Many people believe that a society should be kind and helpful to all of its members rather than ruthlessly allowing everybody to either fail or succeed on their own. That is the philosophical basis for socialism.
Capatilism was created through a collection of ideals created by some of the greatest economists ever born. Most people would say that capitalism was "invented" by the economist Adam Smith in his book "The Wealth of Nations". In his economic system Adam Smith touted a free market in which human nature would decide the prices of goods and services and the government would have little regulation over the economy. He created this system to create a more productive and efficient society in which a person had complete freedom over his wealth. In my opinion though, capitalism was never truly developed for a specific reason but it is a natural system that human nature dictated and has refined over thousands of years.
The earliest traces to the beginnings of capitalism began in 13th century Italy and it grew to foster in various places in Europe. Many believe that the church in certain areas allowed private business ownership and re-investment of capital as a way to fund church efforts. This goes along with the transformation of Christianity from a dark age theocracy to the modern era, which also helped pave the way for science and technology breakthroughs.
