The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) was originally developed in the 1930s to assist in the assessment of mental disorders. Psychologists Starke R. Hathaway and J.C. McKinley created the MMPI to provide a standardized method for evaluating personality traits and psychopathology. Its primary aim was to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric conditions by comparing individuals' responses to a normative sample. Over time, it has evolved into a widely used tool in various clinical, research, and occupational settings.
The CPI (California Psychological Inventory) and the MMPI (Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory) are both psychological assessments, but they serve different purposes. The CPI focuses on measuring interpersonal behavior and social interactions, assessing traits like dominance and sociability, and is often used in organizational settings. In contrast, the MMPI is primarily designed to identify psychological disorders and assess mental health, using a standardized format to evaluate various psychopathological conditions. Therefore, while the CPI emphasizes normal personality traits, the MMPI deals with abnormal psychological aspects.

It was originally created as a set of macros for the TECO text editor but evolved into a standalone, extensible text editor. Stallman later founded the Free Software Foundation and promoted the concept of free software, which Emacs embodies. The editor has since been further developed by many contributors and has numerous variants, the most notable being GNU Emacs.

MMPI stands for the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory. It is a testing favourite of mental health practitioners who use it in identifying an individual's personality features. Developed in the 1930s by Starke Hathaway and J.C. McKinley, it was designed to seek out and identify pathologies. The novelty of the MMPI lay in the fact that it was not designed with any particular personality theory in mind. The University of Minnesota holds the copyright to the test, and thus, the 'Minnesota' in MMPI, and it has been revised and standardized over the years. The latest revision was developed and released in 2003 (ver. MMPI-2 RF). There is even a test for juveniles which was released in 1992 (ver. MMPI-A). While it is quite popular with mental health professionals, it is not without its detractors who claim it has the potential to unfairly label individuals.
