Shimer College students can choose either to reside in the IIT dorms, or to make their own arrangements for off-campus housing. IIT housing for Shimer students is available at Gunsaulus Hall, McCormick Student Village and State Street Village. As of 2011, a dedicated wing had been established in Gunsaulus for first-year Shimer students of traditional college age. All on-campus housing must be reserved through IIT. Many students who choose not to live on campus opt to rent housing in the nearby Bridgeport neighborhood. Exceptions: Students participating in Shimer's study-abroad program in Oxford, England must make special arrangements for housing there. Students participating in Shimer's Weekend College degree program generally commute from elsewhere in the Chicago area or the Midwest.
