To teach within a public school system you are required to have a bachelor's degree with state teachers certification. However, there are alternative routes for individuals who have a bachelor's degree without teachers certification. In other words, you can be certified to teach in specific subjects, and I do not believe this is a long drawn out process, but relatively short. I would suggest that you contact the State Board of Education in the State you wish to teach for appropriate direction. You can also contact the local Board of Education also. In addition, remember you can substitute teach with just 60 credits. It maybe something to think about until your certification comes through. Still, also remember that their may be some non-public institutions where certification is not required, such as catholic schools.

How do you get a teaching certificate?

It depends on the state but you need your bachelors. Then get certified as a teacher through an Alternative Certification Program. It took me only a year. They give you a Probation Certificate until you pass all the state exams. If you do not pass them in a year, they can extend it. You can make the same as the teachers who have a degree on Education.

What kind of academic background is necessary in order to land a teaching job?

In order to teach in a public school in the US, an aspiring grade school teacher will need to have at least a 4-year Bachelors degree such as an Education major with a minor in a subject such as English, Mathematics and Science. Middle and high school teachers typically have a Bachelors degree in the subject they wish to teach. Additionally, many States also require would-be teachers to complete a teaching certification program before they take on a teaching role. Once in a teaching role, educators may wish to further their academic education by studying for an advanced degree such as a Master of Arts in Teaching degree.
