Quite simply, you the parent have the strongest influence on your child's life. by not promoting learning in the home and 'leaving it for their teacher' you are effectively saying to your child that it isn't important. By getting along side what your child is doing at school you are confirming to them that actually, learning is very important, so important that Im willing to give up some of my time to make sure you do well at school. with this attitude they will be set up for success. If you don't know some of the answers, let them know, then go find out! how powerful for a child to see that actually adults are learners too!
