In the US, at least, "the class of " is universally understood to mean "the class that graduated/will graduate in the spring of ". People that graduate at a different time than the rest of the class are normally considered to keep the same class year, as long as they're not graduating a full school year before or after the rest of their class. So if throughout your school years you've been in the "class of 1980" based on starting Kindergarten in fall 1967, but you actually complete your graduation requirements in November 1979, you're still "class of 1980" rather than "class of 1979". However, if you skipped a grade back in elementary school ... or were held back a year ... your class year would shift accordingly.To address your specific questions, the Class of 2021 will graduate high school in spring 2021, and if you graduate in school year 2016-2017 you will be Class of 2017.
