You need a high school diploma to be nearly anything. What employer is going to hire you if you don't have a high school diploma? They are going to think "Gee, if you could not commit to completing your education, then what makes me think that you are going to commit to working well for me?".

To the specific question involving welding; there are some forms of welding that require a great deal of expertise and qualification. You might even discover that you need a college degree to become a welder!
