Which test is necessary is normally determined by the college or university as part of their entrance requirements. Some will accept either one, others want one or the other. Check the schools you are interested in and see what they require.
Of course, doing this by what is required is perfectly fine, I do suggest you study up and take both tests, it not only looks good on your college application, it is also good for educational purposes.
