The University Confidential TrailBlazing team was just asked to come up with a few thoughts on informal or non-formal education.

Informal Learning is a new trend which is taking hold in a lot of industries. Universities and Colleges have ceased to be specific or teach specific skills - a very key one being critical thinking. Informal learning tends to be on the job in nature, it would be something like a company mentorship program, or on the job training. Both of which are informal and in most cases there is no test - once the employee demonstrates proficiency they can move off and do the job.

Internships and CoOp work terms also tend to fall into the category of informal learning. The big reason why informal learning is such a trend right now is because it allows the teaching of specific skills without overdoing it. Unless a student actively pursues it at College or University the likelihood they will acquire the skills the employers these days require, is quite low.
