Same as any other job in the military. Go to a recruiter, score well enough on the ASVAB to qualify and tell your recruiter that you want to be a medic. Make sure it says medic (68W in the US army) on your contract.
Training varied according to the Military Force a person was put in or enlisted in. They went to boot camp which was the same as it is today. Exercise, drill, weapons training, training in fighting in all types of terrain (and some go to the cold areas too) and military rules, rules of engagement and some had to learn languages. After boot camp, many had to go to specialized training in tank warfare, large artillery training, flight school, medic training, etc. To this day the Marines still swear their boot camp is the hardest one.
