How do you split words into syllables?

Words should be divided such that each syllable ends with a consonant, if possible. Thus "wherever" is syllabalized wher-ev-er. Likewise with-out, pres-ti-dig-i-ta-tion. Double consonants are most often split: bul-le-tin, ap-proach.
