In Anton Chekhov's short story, "The Bet" the banker's anxiety is conveyed whiile he is talking about punishment by one of two methods: Capital Punishment (the Death Penalty) or Life Imprisonment. The banker's anxiety is such that of the two horrid ways to come to your demise, awaiting a slow death while waiting for many years is not his preference over the seemingly more humane instant death granted by Capital Punishment.
