depending on the school and what the school board says Unfortunately, I imagine it to be less and less every day. Teachers are allowed minimal, if any, time for planning for their students' lessons, and with "individualized" or "differentiated" education/lessons which require much more time, tasks become nearly impossible. In addition, teachers must devote themselves to the school and public community in numerous ways throughout the year that are often taken for granted or even not recognized by the community. In addition, many do not know or realize that teachers must keep up certification by taking graduate level courses. Often these courses are taken in the summmer months unless they are exceptional and can still meet your individual child's needs while pursuing college credit during the school year. Believe it or not, often teachers serve on committees during summer months in order to meet goals for the coming school year. A teacher who dedicates his/her all to the students, your children, will work 12 hours plus per day (and week-ends), and still not feel there is enough time to meet your child's needs. In addition, with schools or districts that provide a common planning period in effort to ensure consisitency, these planning periods are often replaced with additional meetings to prove efforts toward No Child Left Behind. Think about it. Who do you think will stay in education? Will it be the ones who will sacrifice their personal lives, family, and marriages or those who simply want a job to pay their bills, those who simply document meetings or efforts. Yes. Those who are willing to sacrifice will endure as long as possible, but is there a limit? Think about it. Your children, our children, are the future. Ask yourselves how we as a community can ensure that the genuine, caring, and devoted teachers remain.
