The exact number of credits needed to complete a Masters Degree in Special education will be dependent on the chosen college or university, and whether the individual is required to take appropriate prerequisite courses at the undergraduate level. However, in general it takes approximately 36 to 40 credit hours in the required areas to complete the degree. How long it will take to complete, will depend on how many courses the student is able to take per semester, and the programs sequential nature of course offerings. For someone who is working, it would take approximately two to three years.

Depends on several factors. The state teaching credentials program determines the classes and number of units. It also determines if you need a regular teaching credential before you can get one in special education. I am in CA and special education teachers need the regular 5 year credential with a special education credential. A Master's is not required, but usually a student is so near to getting one complete the degree as well. Call your stated Education department or your nearest university education department. If you all ready have a BS/BA in education your course work should be shorter and the university grad office will analyze your transcript . They may also want any standardize test scores and have you take the GRE to be admitted to the, program.
