Though this is not an absolute, the usual style is called "Five Paragraph Construction". This really means that there should be five MAIN sections to most essays.

The first one is the Introduction, in which you describe to the reader what your topic is, what you intend to convey and what the parts of your essay will be.

The next three parts are the main three characteristics or points of your essay. They should describe the most important things in it, which will tell your readers what they should hope to gain from reading your particular essay. There can be more than three parts, if it is necessary.

The fifth part is the Conclusion. In this part, the writer should sum up what was described or discussed in the previous parts, and reach some kind of overall view for the reader, whether it its opinion (such as in Literature) or fact (as in Science).

If one stays with this basic format (Introduction, Three Explanatory Parts, Conclusion), it is very easy to write an essay, even a long one.
