Of course education is important, but some of the top photographers only graduated from high school. It's an art form and you either have the talent or you don't. There are courses you can take that would teach you a great deal and you could do high school (if you are in high school) and do night courses in Photography. That would give you a great head start.
3-4 years for a bachelor degree
It depends on what country you are in and what qualification you want to receive after studying. I live in the UK and at my college, I get the chance to study photography for 3 years. At my college you can leave after the first or second year. At other colleges, though, they sometimes have it so you have to do 2 years for ONE qualification and cannot leave (unless you want to leave with no grade at all). Then you can go to university and study for another 3 or 4 years. It all depends! I can't help you much because I don't know where you live. Search online for colleges that may be near you and it will tell you how long the courses last. Go for it, though. It's a great subject to learn about! Good luck (:
Photography is either something you are good or bad at. It is a talent/art. Going to university/college can only help you to be your best at it. It refines your talent. If you have a talent and passion for it, I guess you are already a photographer.
You don't have to go to college at all! Experience and a good portfolio are more important for a photographer than formal education. However, courses in art, photography, and business management can help a photographer to financial and critical success.
