Eatonville, Florida, was founded in 1887 by a group of African American settlers, including Josiah Eaton, after they purchased land from the South Florida Railroad Company. It was established as one of the first all-Black municipalities in the United States, aimed at providing a community where African Americans could live independently and self-govern. The town became notable for its strong cultural heritage, particularly in literature and the arts, with Zora Neale Hurston emerging as one of its most famous residents. Eatonville's establishment represented a significant step towards Black autonomy during a time of widespread racial discrimination.
One of the first all black US towns.
